Every Spring, the rolling landscape up the West coast of the Western Cape, starts a spectacular transformation on a uniquely grand scale, in that this place is the only place in the world where there is such an amazing and diverse set of flora and with the flora of course, comes an equally unique group of fauna. It’s a special kind of Eden…
Now, I’ve been in the region in Spring before, but somehow I always manage to miss the peak of the wild flower blooms and only catch the last of the beautiful display.
Not this year though… This year I’m planning on getting there before the wild flowers share their vibrant outer coats with the world (or at least during a good peak)! I will not miss it!
There should hopefully be some great scenes to capture and of course that means that I’ll need to be prepared with the gear that you take out with you.
I’ll be taking 3 lenses with me on this trip:
– Canon 50mm F1.4 – For some awesome shallow depth of field & bokeh effects.
– Canon 24-105mm F4 L IS – For those harder to reach spots and also for the macro function as I don’t have a dedicated macro lens. This lens is also great if you’re limited with what you can carry due to it’s good range of focal lengths as well as the constant F4 aperature.
– Canon 17-40mm F4 L – For the immensely beautiful landscapes and (hopefully) flower covered koppies.

I’ll obviously also have my other standard gear as well:
– Manfrotto tripod
– Lexar CF 16GB CF Cards
– Canon 5D MkII
Hopefully I can arrange for a good looking car to use as well so I can get some beautiful car images while I’m out in that amazing scenery. This means that I’ll need to take my strobes with me. I have 2 Canon 430EXII & 2 Canon 580EXII strobes. This should hopefully be enough to get some lighting done on a car or a model of the human variety.
Should I happen to miss the blooms this time around (touch wood, and pray that I don’t!), it’ll still be a great trip out to one of my favourite regions of this beautiful and diverse country as I’ll still get to see friends and spend some time with my cousin!
